He emigrated from Bremen, Germany on the Ariel and arrived in New York on September 23, 1868. His wife, Marie Devantier Schulz, and ten children came to join him the following year in August of 1869. He and his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio after an eleventh child was born in Buffalo, New York. He was a civil engineer who built bridges in Ohio. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States on March 13, 1876.
